10:14a Production week...
Well, Dove's show is coming up this week, and as always I am a little nervous for the whole group. They always seem to come in on a wing and a prayer at the 11th hour, but the truth is, this is an elementary school production and none of the parents are expecting a Broadway (or even a million miles OFF Broadway!) quality show. They just want to see their kids give it their best shot.
The director, Mrs. C, is pregnant, and I know she's had a lot of other things to juggle this year, including teaching second grade. I wonder if maybe she got in a little over her head this year though in choosing Willy Wonka Jr, as it is a show with a lot of special effects and the school drama club has a budget of like, nothing! I've read Dove's script but have purposely kept my head OUT of rehearsals or sneaking any peeks. It has a very large cast, the kids only rehearse once a week (though they added one or two last minute after school practices for the principals last week), and they JUST got through the last scene at the last rehearsal. All that is left is one dress rehearsal this week for each cast (which the whole student body attends - and mercifully, they are usually a wonderfully appreciative audience despite technical gaffs, forgotten lines and microphone difficulties!), then the performances.
I usually try to go to the dress rehearsal to take pictures, and I am very curious what kind of set they will have. Very simple, I'm sure, given the lack of money, but I'm wondering how they are going to do the chocolate river Augustus falls into (Dove has mentioned a baby pool), the nut chute that Veruca goes down (I fear my kid will be forced to sing and walk backwards down steps into a stairwell offstage), the pink candy boat, etc. Will Violet somehow blow up like a blueberry, or just turn blue? I don't even know what the Oompah Loompahs will look like. I know all Dove was required to have was a set of black clothes and a colored hoodie for her night in the chorus as a Candy Kid / Oompah Loompah. I'm hoping they at least get some crazy makeup for the Oompahs!
Dove has been practicing her lines a lot this week and is doing a good job. I have to remind her not to rear-end the audience while onstage, and to SLOW DOWN saying her lines, and not fidget when it's not her line, but overall, I think she's as ready as she's gonna be! I found a Veruca Salt dress on Ebay for her. It is a little big in the waist and a big long in the cuffs, but I think we can pin it satisfactorily since I am no friend to the needle and thread. I am very excited to see the other kids. Dove says Cole, the 5th grade boy playing Willy, is very good. Mrs C sent home CDs of all the songs as instrumentals so the kids could practice at home, and I think Robin and I could sing the whole show ourselves by now, we've heard Dove play it so many times. Robin has decided that Violet has the best part and she would like to sing her song, "Chew It" (and she actually does a pretty good job...we'll have to see if she goes the drama club route along with Dove once she reaches third grade and is eligible.)
I have to give Mrs. C credit for always managing to pull it together. I do not envy her working with a cast of 60 some fidgety, goofy elementary schools and trying to put together a show. I remember when I taught middle school, a colleague and I would get a the kids to do a one act play each spring and THAT was trying enough. We had NO stage or auditorium, had to just move tables out of the way in the cafeteria, no money, no costumes, no lighting, nada. But somehow the kids would pull it off to the point that their parents and friends liked seeing them. :) I fondly remember being in a classroom production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears when I was in 4th grade, and our 8th grade class doing one act bible story plays one spring. They were full of mishaps and lines gone wrong, but it was fun, and it planted that theatre loving seed in me at an early age, and that is what I see it doing for Dove.
Fingers crossed it all goes well!

1:06a I've always been a little more straight-to-the-point....
I know I haven't been around here much - and please keep in mind that my absence is both read/write; that is, i haven't been reading LJ either.
However, if you have any burning questions for me, particularly since I've been absent, go ahead and comment them and I'll try to address them over the coming week.
I claim the right to get bored and stop answering questions at any time. Nor will I neglect other responsibilities to answer questions.
I figured some of you might have real questions about me, my life, my health, etc. So here's your chance.
